OSWEGO, IL The Village of Oswego on Wednesday announced that it would award grants to 46 businesses affected by the coronavirus pandemic and related shutdowns.
Funding for the grants is provided by the Local CURE Economic Support Program, administered
by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, and funded through the
Federal CARES Act. Through a competitive process, Oswego received $250,000 of approximately $3.96 million distributed to communities in the region.

Unemployment continues to increase in Illinois, leading the nation in new filings. With 142,700 new filers last week, numbers from the U.S. Department of Labor released Thursday show Illinois was second only to California s weekly claims.
The Land of Lincoln had 35,000 more filers than the week before. That eclipses the total number of unemployment filings across the country, which reported 21,000 fewer new filers than the week before.

State Rep. Mary Flowers, D-Chicago, said the state should have been preparing for increased unemployment issues for months if it was going to continue issuing COVID-19 restrictions, increasing unemployment. But, she said they didn t and constituents have mounting problems with backlogs and fraud.

McHenry County small businesses who are experiencing financial hardship due to the Coronavirus pandemic, and who are in the accommodation, food services, arts, entertainment, or recreation sectors, can apply for $15,000 grants from McHenry County government.

Businesses are encouraged to apply as soon as possible, while funds are available. The application deadline is Dec. 31 or when funds are depleted, whichever comes first. The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity recently awarded additional Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act funds to local governments to allocate to local small businesses.
