Illinois Making COVID Vaccine Available to Weekend Travelers

COVID-19 vaccines will be available to Memorial Day weekend travelers up and down Illinois.
The state announced clinics at Union Station in Chicago and four TravelCenters of America locations in Mount Vernon, Troy, Effingham and Bloomington.

CHICAGO (WLS) Over the last year, the COVID-19 pandemic had a disproportionate impact on people of color.
According to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention, Black, Native American and Hispanic people have died at three times the rate of white people.
When vaccines became available, numbers showed the inequities continued.
Ken Griffin, chief operating officer with Howard Brown Health, said mass vaccination events helps minority communities that also includes grassroots efforts.

COVID-19 vaccines available for Austin residents as Rush University Medical Center, PCC Community Wellness Center team up


CHICAGO (WLS) Rush University Medical Center teamed up with the PCC Community Wellness Center to vaccinate 1,200 Austin residents against COVID-19 starting Sunday.
More than 80 Rush volunteers came out Sunday to provide the vaccine from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The vaccination efforts will take place every Sunday until April 18 at the Catalyst Circle Rock Charter School.
Rush University Medical Center equity officer Dr. David Ansell said the initiative is part of the city s Chicago Plus program that focuses on the 15 hardest hit communities by the COVID-19 pandemic.
High mortality rates, high hospitalization rates, and the vaccine is the only way that we re going to mitigate it, Dr. Ansell said. ....

Illinois COVID Update Today: IL reports 1,700 new coronavirus cases, 55 deaths and record-high vaccines, record-low test positivity


CHICAGO (WLS) Illinois Department of Public Health officials reported 1,700 new confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 and 55 deaths on Thursday.
The state s test positivity hit another new record low for a second straight day, falling to 2.5%. The state also set another vaccine record Thursday, reaching it s highest-ever 7-day vaccination average.
Officials said they are targeting 30 suburban Cook County communities for some of the remaining United Center appointments. We re told that list is still being compiled, but we have a sense of where many of those areas might be.
Officials said Thursday the the appointments will be prioritized for areas with high infection rates and low vaccine uptake, determined, in part, by the county s COVID-19 Community Vulnerability Index. ....
