Following is the text of UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ video message to the opening of the Aswan Forum for Sustainable Peace and Development, held from 1 to 5 March:
It is a pleasure to greet this year’s Aswan Forum. I welcome your focus on “Shaping Africa’s New Normal: Recovering Stronger, Rebuilding Better”.
The COVID-19 [pandemic] continues to upend lives and economies across the world, endangering our work for peace, human rights and the Sustainable Development Goals. [The year] 2021 must be the year to get on track. Pandemic recovery is our chance.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has cautioned the world against creating a situation whereby there would be ‘Vaccine Haves’ and ‘Have Nots’ as the world fights the COVID-19 pandemic.
Below is his video message to the high-level webinar on the African COVID-19 Vaccine Financing and Deployment Strategy a few days ago:
I welcome your invitation to join you as you come together to focus on COVID-19 vaccines for the people of Africa. I have been consistently issuing a loud and strong call to the international community: we must ensure that vaccines are seen as a global public good people’s vaccines accessible and affordable to all.
US Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has reiterated his call for equitable access to Covid-19 vaccines as the global caseload has surpassed the 100 million mark, another grim milestone as the pandemic rages on. I want to utilise this vital platform today to once again urge all countries, economies, and manufacturers to work with - and through - the COVAX facility to realize the commitments of equitable access, especially for the most vulnerable, the UN chief said in his pre-recorded video message to the High-level Webinar on the African Covid-19 Vaccine Financing and Deployment Strategy on Wednesday. We must ensure that vaccines are seen as a global public good - people s vaccines - accessible and affordable to all, said the Secretary-General.
