Valmet receives third battery order for new factory
Valmet Automotive has signed a third customer contract within a short period of time for the production of battery systems at its plant in Uusikaupunki, Finland. The customer is an unnamed “well-known car manufacturer”.
After Valmet Automotive received a first order for the production of battery systems and modules from a major carmaker, the expansion of the Uusikaupunki plant into a battery factory was announced in December 2020 as the second location after the Salo plant. A second major order was already announced at the end of January 2021.
Meanwhile, installation of the production lines has begun at the plant. Production at the new battery plant, which is being built on the site of the existing vehicle plant, will start in the second half of this year. ....

A FINNISH consortium is building a pilot plant to convert waste from soybean processing into compostable bioplastic.
Using industrial biotechnology techniques, the pilot plant will convert soy molasses that are unsuitable for use as food into lactic acid. This can then be polymerised into polylactic acid (PLA), which has a range of uses including in packaging, medical implants and 3D printing filaments.
The process developed as an outcome of this cooperation project is the first in the world to produce an ecological lactic acid polymer from the side streams of soy production. This way we can offer a sustainable alternative to sugar- and corn-based polylactic acid,” said Henri Nieminen, CEO of Finnfoam. ....

Valmet Automotive is creating 1,000 new jobs in Finland in its vehicle and battery system production. A few weeks ago, the contract manufacturer and battery producer had already announced that it would also create new jobs and capacities in Germany.

Valmet Automotive announced on Tuesday that it has launched a recruitment campaign for 1,000 production and salaried employees in Finland. New personnel are being recruited for the company s Uusikaupunki and Salo sites.
Some 700 new employees are being sought for the plant in Uusikaupunki and 300 in Salo.
Tomi Salo, HR Director of Valmet Automotive, says that recruitment is being driven by strong and rapid growth in demand for vehicles and battery systems. ....
