After teaching an evening typewriting class, Mary E. Jones Parrish was losing herself in a good book when her daughter Florence Mary noticed something strange outside. “Mother,” Florence said, “I see men with guns.” It was May 31, 1921, in Tulsa. A large group of armed Black men had congregated below Parrish’s apartment, situated in the city’s thriving Black business district, known as Greenwood. Stepping outside, Parrish learned that a Black teen-ager named Dick Rowland had been arrested on a false allegation of attempted rape, and that her neighbors were planning to march to the courthouse to try to protect him. ....

On Monday morning, shortly after the final arguments in the trial of Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd began, members of Floyd’s family walked through the deserted streets of downtown Minneapolis toward the fortified entrance of the Hennepin County Government Center. Philonise Floyd, George’s brother, was accompanied by his wife, Keeta Floyd; the Reverend Al Sharpton; Representative Sheila Jackson Lee; and a small swarm of photographers and cameramen. As they approached the fortified barricades of the courthouse, they held up their fists in the symbol of Black power, otherwise ignoring requests for comment. Three thousand members of the Minnesota National Guard have been activated this week, roughly the number of U.S. troops that are currently deployed in Afghanistan. On a gray January morning, Santos Torres III, a thirty-year-old courier for Bergen Funeral Service, in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey, caught a ride to the French consulate in Manhattan. Normally Torres takes a train into New York, where he spends the day traversing the city carrying a messenger bag filled with death certificates, cash for notary and consular fees, letters from doctors, and other documents detailing the transportation and burial arrangements for the recently deceased.
