Mumbai to get 12 new water taxi routes, ROPAX services on 4 routes

Industry > Industry monitor > Shipping 08 April 2021 Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister of State (I/C) for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, chaired a meeting to review the Urban Water Transportation projects for Mumbai, Maharashtra. Senior Officials of the Ministry, Chairperson of Mumbai Port and officials of Maharashtra Maritime Board and other stakeholders were present in the meeting. The ministry of shipping and waterways has proposed the operationalisation of 4 new routes for ROPAX ferry services and 12 new routes of water taxis by December 2021, in order to promote eco-friendly waterways transportation and reduce the traffic load of crowded Mumbai city roads.  At present, ROPAX (roll-on/roll-off passenger) service from Bhaucha Dhakka (Ferry Wharf) to Mandwa (Alibag) is successfully using waterways, reducing the road journey of 110 km to about 18 km, thereby reducing travel time of daily commuters from about 3-4 hours to merely one hour. Similar services are planned to be operational

RoPax ferries to be operational on 4 routes in Mumbai by December Mumbai s public transportation system is set to get a major boost with water taxis on 12 routes by May and RoPax ferries on four routes to be operational by December 2021, Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said on Wednesday. The development follows launch of a roll-on roll-off (RoRo) cum passenger ferry service, also called RoPax , between Mumbai and Mandwa near Alibaug last year which saw one lakh passengers in 20 weeks besides transportation of 20,000 vehicles. After successful operation of Mandawa RoPax service that reduced the journey time between Mumbai and Mandawa from three hours to 45 minutes, we are going to operate RoPax service on four more routes by December 2021, Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Mandaviya told PTI.

The move is part of the government’s plans to promote eco-friendly water-based transportation and reduce traffic on Mumbai’s overburdened road infrastructure. The plan for the new waterways came as a result of a meeting that was chaired by the Minister of State (I/C) for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Mansukh Mandaviya, to review the Urban Water Transportation projects for Mumbai, Maharashtra.
