Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. is putting out the call for artists for the Activate This Place grant program. The program awards artists and makers up to $5000 per project.
The group is looking for those who want to install public art pieces, do pop-up type performances, turn spaces into parklets, and more. These placemaking initiatives are designed to bring life and energy to otherwise bland and sometimes neglected areas of the city.
What is placemaking? According to the city it s a way to reimagine unused spaces and facilitate social interaction and improve the quality of life for those in the community. ....

Environment the state is close to banning plastic bags from grocery and retail stores all together. casey stegall is live in west hollywood to explain. hi, casey. julie, good to see you. they are called urban tumbleweeds. we are talking about the plastic bags that many of us when we come to places like supermarkets right here. they pollute our oceans and our cities. we know for sure that it takes longer to break down in the land fill than the paper but that is why the plastic bags would be banned in california if lawmakers get their way. considering each year, some 19 billion of them are used here in the golden state alone. our grocers do a very good job of listening to customers. it will be challenging in the beginning as we move to changing behavior of our consumers but in the long run i think it will be the right thing to do and i think our consumers will adjust to it. now, the assembly has already passed legislation that ....
