A month into the legislative session, advocates are turning a spotlight back on an issue that failed to gain traction at the state level last year, even as the coronavirus pandemic exposed stark disparities in health care: declaring racism a public health crisis in Connecticut and passing reform to address long-standing inequities.
In June, following the death of George Floyd at the hands of police and amid a health crisis that has disproportionately harmed communities of color, cities and states across the country took the symbolic step of declaring racism a public health crisis. West Hartford s 25th-annual celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. s life is scheduled for Jan. 18.
WEST HARTFORD, CT West Hartford s 25th-annual celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. s life is scheduled for Jan. 18.
The event is slated for 10 to 11:30 a.m. a.m., virtually on West Hartford Community Interactive on Comcast Ch. 5, Frontier Ch. 6098 and www.whctv.org.
This year’s keynote speakers are Cori Mackey and A.J. Johnson of the Center for Leadership and Justice.
Mackey has two decades of executive leadership experience in urban ministry, social justice work, nonprofit management, and faith-based community organizing. In August 2014, she was appointed executive director of the Center for Leadership and Justice. Mackey s passions are engaging low-income communities in organizing efforts that bring about quality of life chan ....
