On March 26, 2021, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmad’s office issued a statement that Eritrea has agreed to withdraw its forces from the war-torn Tigray province in Ethiopia. Following a trip to the Eritrea capital, Asmara, the Ethiopian PM Abiy wrote on Twitter that “the government of Eritrea has agreed to withdraw its forces out of the Ethiopian border.
The Ethiopian National Defense Force will take over guarding the border areas effective immediately.” Eritrean forces had entered Tigray after the outlawed Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) fired rockets across the border into Asmara thereby provoking the Eritrean troops into crossing the border, Abiy further said.
