President Rodrigo R. Duterte (PPD File photo) MANILA - Informal settlement remains a "very serious" problem in the Philippines, President Rodrigo R. Duterte said Sunday. "Nobody but nobody can solve it except the Filipino and 'yung workers sa government nakatutok talaga (workers of government who are really focused on it)," Duterte said during the groundbreaking ceremony of the Pampanga Provincial Hospital-Clark in San Fernando City, Pampanga. He reiterated his call to the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) to ensure that all idle government-owned lands are distributed to the needy before he steps down in June. "My orders to the Department of Agrarian Reform, basta lahat ng lupa ng sa gobyerno 'pag may squatters na, ibigay mo na (if there are squatters staying in government-owned land, just give it to them)," he said. Fuel tax suspension pushed due to Russia-Ukraine crisis

(File photo) MANILA - Deputy Speaker Rufus Rodriguez on Monday said there is more compelling reason to suspend the excise taxes on oil products due to the worsening Russia-Ukraine crisis, as he echoed his fellow lawmakers' appeal for leaders of Congress to recommend to President Rodrigo Duterte the holding of a special session. "I support the proposal of my colleagues for a special session. We have to act now before the cost of crude and domestic fuel prices rise further," Rodriguez said. Rodriguez also appealed to Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez, who is opposing the proposed suspension, "to look at the bright side of the proposal." Rodriguez said if fuel prices continue rising in the months ahead, many Filipinos who are already suffering from economic difficulties because of the pandemic may resort to additional belt-tightening measures. "If the government cuts oil taxes and fuel prices, it would in effect be telling the public, 'No, don't do fu ....
