as a matter of fact, in march when the irs commissioner testified before congress he didn t mention it at all, and i ll get back to that in a second and finally in june of 2013 they revealed to congress that in fact they were unrecoverable. let s go back and look at march 26th hearing. remember, they knew in february right here, knew that the irs e-mails were gone. let s go to march and jason chaffetz was told that all the e-mails were archived on an external server and could be retrieved. take a look. you checked the set box a sent box and the in box and suddenly have all the e-mails, correct? they get taken off and stored in servers and you ve got 90,000 employees. i m not i m asking to find one. they type in her e-mail address. we could find and we in fact are searching we can find lois lerner s e-mails. really? well, they knew in february
e-mails? no, they didn t tell them that. as a matter of fact, in march when the irs commissioner testified before congress he didn t mention it at all, and i ll get back to that in a second and finally in june of 2013 they revealed to congress that in fact they were unrecoverable. let s go back and look at march 26th hearing. remember, they knew in february right here, knew that the irs e-mails were gone. let s go to march and jason chaffetz was told that all the e-mails were archived on an external server and could be retrieved. take a look. you checked the set box a sent box and the in box and suddenly have all the e-mails, correct? they get taken off and stored in servers and you ve got 90,000 employees. i m not i m asking to find one. they type in her e-mail address. we could find and we in fact are searching we can find lois lerner s e-mails. really? well, they knew in february
alarming right now with the lois lerner emails and the six other individuals. if you have a hard drive crash to send it to a repair shop to recoup the hardware failures that happen on the hard drive itself would be relatively easy to do. otherwise if you had software that destroyed the evidence or destroyed everything on the hard drive you would have something that would erase sector bisek tore of the hard drive itself it would make it uncoferl at that point. i had external hard drive and dumped a lot of pictures on it. all of a sudden they couldn t recover the pictures. i sent it to the manufacturers they spent three months. instead they sent me replacement hard drive minus the pictures. they said it crashed and unrecoverable is that different. not necessarily. in that case they may not have been able to recover it. companies specialize in recovery of data. most organizations that have hard drive failures can send them to these places clean rooms and reassemble the hard drive and
way, is there anyone else s hard drive that is missing? is there anyone else s emails that we re going to have trouble recovering of the 80 people we are investigating at the irs? only then did the irs commissioner find out there were six other people s hard drives that had been damaged and unrecoverable. so i would think if i were running the investigation, those would be natural follow-up questions you would ask. i think it s gross inat the expense. i guess i mean what are the odds that the key time period for the key person, that s what i keep going back to. it s unbelievable. that her emails, yet she made a complaint in the summer of 2011 about having hard drive problem. what of that that she knew somewhere down the road it s so peculiar, yet, on the other hand, she doesn t have a crystal ball. i think she knew she was breaking the law well enough when this story broke she elm immediately pled the fifth and refused to cooperated with us and why
it s extremely unlikely for those losses to occur. reporter: and being called to testify before two house committees. house ways and means investigator said they first knew about destroying the e-mails in february but told them they would produce all communications. i certainly took him at his word there would be a new openness when he came in to head the irs and that certainly hasn t happened. reporter: orrin hatch said he believes the e-mails were intentionally destroyed and so far the majority leader isn t drawing conclusions. i talked to senator wyden today and he and senator hatch looking into this, what we should do. reporter: lerner didn t seem worried when told her e-mail was unrecoverable. writing in an e-mail sometimes stuff just happens. those targeted are furious. it s very deliberate those that said they re lost it certainly look likes a cover-up.
