Lutz grew up in the midst of the Great Depression and, without any financial help from her family, earned a bachelor s degree in nursing from the University of Rochester and a master s degree from the University of Colorado before heading to Case Western Reserve University in Ohio to earn her doctorate. 
She pursued a career in nursing and also became a professor and a college administrator to impart her wisdom to other students, according to Mower.
