Decision to introduce new legislation to address smoking habit 'timely' | Daily Express Online

The Ministry of Health’s decision to introduce new legislation to address the smoking habit, through a strategy termed as Generational Endgame (GEG), is seen by experts and activists as a timely move.   
Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin is expected to table the proposed law in the Dewan Rakyat in July. On Feb 17, he announced that a new Act will be introduced to, among other things, ban smoking and possession of tobacco products, including vape, for the generation born in and after 2005.     
Khairy had said that the high cost of treating diseases associated with smoking was among the factors that drove the government to initiate the bold move.  
Associate Prof Dr Mohamad Haniki Nik Mohamed, who is the leader of Sustainable Smokefree Campus Community Flagship at the International Islamic University Malaysia, said GEG has what it takes to mitigate the onset of the smoking habit and use of tobacco products in a more comprehensive ....

'New model needed top rev up bumiputera economy', says academic


KUALA LUMPUR (April 12): Nearly 64 years after attaining independence, Malaysia’s bumiputera agenda has yet to bear the desired results.
This is because poverty continues to haunt the biggest component of the nation’s population while bumiputera corporate equity ownership is still far below the government’s 30% target.
According to media reports, the incidence of poverty among the bumiputera stood at 7.2 percent as of 2019, compared with 1.4% (Chinese) and 4.8% (Indians).
As for bumiputera equity ownership, it stood at 16.2% in 2020 compared with 23% in 2011 and 19.3% in 1990.
Addressing the widening economic disparity may be a huge challenge for the government as Malaysia readies itself to face the post-COVID-19 era because the pandemic has had detrimental effects on bumiputera economy and incomes.   ....
