How Kamala Harris can find the solution for the migration crisis


The first task on her agenda should be to create a Truth Commission. Appoint academic experts, faith leaders, human rights investigators and members of the communities of people from Central America to sit on the commission. Its purpose: to come to terms with our role in the human rights tragedies of El Salvador and its neighbors and to create a full record of the consequences of our military and foreign policy choices.
We know the contours of the story: the conflict in El Salvador was where President Reagan drew a Cold War line in the sand. The Reagan Administration ignored El Salvador’s decades of brutal military rule, the oppression of campesinos, and the assassinations of Archbishop Oscar Romero, the political leaders of the democratic opposition, labor organizers, and four American churchwomen working alongside the displaced. ....

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador - Saúl Meléndez, a former fighter during El Salvador’s civil war, was for years a loyal member of the leftist political party formed by his fellow ex-guerrillas after the war.
But Meléndez has now won his first elected office — not with them, but as a member of President Nayib Bukele’s New Ideas party.
The Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front — the party Meléndez left in 2015 and that expelled Bukele in 2017 — suffered a drubbing in February s national elections. Some question whether with its four remaining federal legislators, down from 23 before the election, the FMLN can even survive. ....

Greg Grandin is professor of history at Yale University. He won the Pulitzer Prize in Non-Fiction in 2020 for his book The End of the Myth: From the Frontier to the Border Wall in the Mind of America. He has also republished his book from 2006 Empire’s Workshop: Latin America, the United States, and the Making of an Imperial Republic.  Professor Grandin served on the United Nations Truth Commission investigating the Guatemalan Civil War.
