In Africa, Nigeria and the world over, it is important that everyone take the issue of elder abuse seriously. If people must aspire to a ripe old age, if the world must become a better place where justice and equity guide the affairs of men, then the elderly can neither be abused nor ignored.
As South Africa joins the globe in commemorating World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu has urged South Africans to defend the elderly against abuse, by protecting and upholding their rights.
Each year since 2006, June 15th has been recognized as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization.
