UK banks and investors are responsible for almost double the UK s net annual carbon emissions, a damning new report by WWF and Greenpeace has found.
The analysis argues that based on the carbon footprint of its multi-billion pound investment portfolios, The City of London would be ranked the ninth biggest emitter of CO2 in the world if it was a country - boasting more emissions than Germany. In 2019, UK financial institutions were responsible for financing 805 million tonnes of CO2 emissions, according to the research by the environmental charities. ....

A new report [1], published today (25 May 2021) by Greenpeace UK and WWF, finds that UK banks and asset managers were responsible for financing 805 million tonnes of CO2 in 2019, which would make The City of London the 9th biggest emitter of CO2 in the world if it were a country – ranked higher than Germany [2]. The new research points towards finance as one of the UK’s biggest contributors to climate change and supports calls for regulation to be introduced across the sector to bring it into line with Paris Agreement targets.  ....

The Independent this week about an incredibly sad and traumatic case of a newborn baby who died in France.
The journalist reports that this family fled persecution in Iraq, left Turkey because they felt unwelcome, were exploited by traffickers and passed through several safe European countries including Germany, Belgium and France where they were allegedly mistreated.
My thoughts go directly to the family who experienced this heartbreaking loss.
By the time this family made their way to Europe the global system had already failed them. ....
