28 killed in illegal Moroccan garment factory

10 February, 202128 workers were killed when a clandestine garment factory in Tangiers, Morocco, was flooded by rainwater. The factory, located in the basement of a residential building, did not meet the necessary health and safety conditions, and unions are calling for those responsible to be held accountable.
According to IndustriALL affiliates in Morocco, more than 130 people were employed in the illegal factory in inhuman conditions, not meeting the minimum requirements for health and safety and decent work.
Moroccan trade union centers Union Marocaine du travail (UMT) and the Confédération démocratique du travail (CDT), are holding authorities and employers responsible for this avoidable tragedy, saying that there is a general acceptance of the exploitation of workers and violations of working conditions in order to accumulate wealth. ....

Roadmap agreed for conflict resolution at Veolia Morocco

3 February, 2021A significant landmark was achieved on 1 February, at an agreement signing ceremony in Tangier, Morocco, that ended a year-long strike and set the roadmap for a new relationship between 500 workers and management of Veolia subsidiary Amanor.
IndustriALL contacted Veolia in May 2020, after all mediation efforts had failed to bring the parties together. Amanor workers were protesting a long and serious list of violations. Veolia’s strong public commitments on trade union rights were put to the test, and the new roadmap agreed by all parties is a strong example of a multinational company reacting in the correct way.

Moroccan miners end underground protest

English
21 December, 2020As negotiations with the employer over a breached agreement have started, the 100 mine workers in Morocco who spent the last ten days 700 metres underground have suspended their sit-in.
100 Moroccan mine workers have spent the last ten days 700 metres underground in the Jebel Aouam mine near M’rirt in Khénifra province, after management of Compagnie Minière de Touissit (CMT) failed to implement an agreement with the union. Another 200 workers protested above ground, nearly halting production all together.
Workers demanded that management honour and implement the agreement signed with l’Union Marocaine du travail (UMT) in 2019, guaranteeing improved living conditions, better working conditions in the mine, and the provision of occupational health and safety measures. ....

Moroccan miners hold underground sit-in

Jebel Aouam mine
The workers are striking and occupying the mine because the management of Compagnie Minière de Touissit (CMT) failed to implement an agreement signed with IndustriALL affiliate l’Union Marocaine du travail (UMT) in 2019. The agreement, signed in the presence of a representative of the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Environment and of the local authority, guaranteed improved living conditions, better working conditions inside the mine, and the provision of occupational health and safety measures.
Workers agreed a productivity target at the mine, which produces silver, gold, lead and zinc. The workers met the productivity target, but management failed to honour its side of the agreement. After continued failure by management to meet its obligations, and failure by the Ministry and local authorities to intervene, the UMT members were forced to take the desperate action of going on strike and staging an underground sit-in. ....
