His father the was founder of the Maryland Medical Society and his grandfather was a signer of the declaration of independence. So he comes from a wellheeled family. He will become a midshipment at age 15 in 1815 and will serve with distinction by 1844. He will be promoted to captain, and he will be named the first superintendent of the United StatesNaval Academy in annapolis. He is the founder in many ways of that school.
