Congratulations Dr Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr Baumann AM from the Northern Territory, who has been named the Senior Australian of the year for 2021.
Dr Ungunmerr Baumann was recognised for her contribution to children’s education, demonstrating an admirable commitment to making Australia a better place.
Minister for Senior Australians and Aged Care Services, Richard Colbeck, said Dr Ungunmerr Baumann had gone above and beyond in her service to education in the Top End.
“Miriam-Rose became the first fully qualified Aboriginal teacher in the Northern Territory in 1975, and later served as the principal of the Catholic school in her home community,” Minister Colbeck said. ....

An Aboriginal activist dedicated to cultural independence and education, and an advocate for migrant and refugee women are among those who have been named the 2021 Australians of the Year.
Dr Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr Baumann AM, 73, and Rosemary Kariuki, 60, were awarded this year s Senior Australian of the Year and Local Hero awards at a ceremony in Canberra on Monday night.
Grace Tame, a 26-year-old sexual assault survivor and advocate, was named Australian of the Year, becoming the first Tasmanian to do so in the program s 61-year history.
Isobel Marshall, a 22-year-old social entrepreneur helping women access personal hygiene products, rounded out the all-women slate of recipients as Young Australian of the Year. ....

First Aboriginal teacher named Senior Australian of the Year

TERRITORY activist, educator and artist Dr Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr Baumann AM has been named the 2021 Senior Australian of the Year.
Dr Ungunmerr Baumann AM, from Daly River, became the Northern Territory s first fully qualified Aboriginal teacher in 1975 before becoming the principal of her home community s school.
She then went on to visit schools through the Top End advocating for the inclusion of art in Territory kids education as an art consultant for the NT Department of Education.
The 73-year-old was awarded the prestigious Senior Australian of the Year award at a ceremony in Canberra this evening.
Beyond teaching, Dr Ungunmerr Baumann continued working to bridge the gap between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians and advocating for the independence of her people when she was appointed to the Federal Government s National Indigenous Council, and then by establishing the Miriam Rose Foundation in 2013. ....
