The depths of the financial crisis in 2008. the data shows more americans have been able to move from part-time work to full-time work. that s a big deal. and also, wages have gone up and consumer spending is higher. cnn s global economic analyst with me now. strong numbers across the board. absolutely. weren t we sitting here two months ago freaking out when the stock market was plummeting and china s concerns are very real? they are, they are, and to be fair, one month of good data, as you know, does not a trend make. if in two months this is happening, we can have a more real conversation. what s really different is this wage growth. that s what we were waiting for. the unemployment figure has actually been falling for some time now. and that s good news, but we just hadn t seen that pick up in wages. and that was really strange. that was different than in recovers of the past. the fact you re now seeing the biggest hike in six years in wages, and across the board in education ....
It. that is the area of this economy you hope to see the most job creation, small business. they always talk about the unemployment figure. this 92-plus million people out there not working in this country. that s almost a record number, at least a record number the last 15, 20 years, and there s nothing out there for them. people have basically decides there s no jobs out there. i m going to do whatever i can. they basically say look, i give up looking for a job. doug? we shouldn t be surprised. last year versus this years we have a zero productivity if economy. it s not new. the same story. we ll be right back. stay with us. ....
2016. the new president whomever he or she may be will take office. it will take a period of time for legislation to go through. if you look at what the market was doing before reagan took office it was exactly like this type, going up and down, up and down. but as you can see it was an extraordinarily strong market. some indeed. but some say a lower unemployment figure is good news but wall street is bracing for higher interest rates and that would affect everyone from home buyers to folks trying to expand their businesses, right? it used to be the unemployment rate was the key measure to look at, but today it s not. the reason it s not, uma, there s been a huge group of people who have actually left the labor force. they didn t just go unemployed, they got so discouraged they left the labor force. if you look at the right number, the right number should be how many people are employed as a percentage of the adult population and that number has tumbled from 64.7% when clinton left ....
This time. mark i think we in the media are guilty of when we give out the unemployment figure we give out general unemployment figures, we rarely talk about the unemployment figures in the african-american community and the latino community and how they re stuck much more difficult to get movement. shomari, i want to ask you where you think things go from here going back to the baltimore situation. well, in talking to the people in baltimore, they tell me that there s a distrust of the police. you have to keep in mind, a lot of the youth and the people i talk to say they ve had run ins with officers. now i want to make sure i m abundantly clear. there are some people who say that the officers are great, that they have a good relationship. in fact, last night i saw an officer thank someone for picking up trash. but then again there are others who claim that they have a distrust of police and how do you bridge the gap? how do you bring it together in which both can come together and ....
steven moore the labor department gives us the 6.7% unemployment figure. economists say, of course, that s not the real unemployment number, because it doesn t include the underemployed and those who have given up searching. that could be as high as 15% xx%. how do we get that number down? great question. first of all i agree with christine s analysis. i think she s exactly right. we don t exactly know how many jobs, more jobs would have been created if we didn t have these blizzards in the last four weeks. but i look at a couple of the statistics that christine didn t mention. the one that economists, jake, are most concerned about across the board is the decline in what we call the labor force participation rate. those are the number of americans between the ages ever 18 and 64 that could be working and what we re finding that number is still really low, jake, and i find that to be troubling. and, you know, it s interesting, christine talked about the ....
