a newly unsealed document shows the agency is looking into several crimes which include the, quote, willful retention of national defense information. that revelation does a couple of things, one, it intensifies the focus on former president trump as the possible or a possible subject of the investigation. trump has claimed a standing order to declassify documents he took from the white house, but in a cnn exclusive, 18 former top trump administration officials tell us they never heard of any such order issued while trump was in office. it also may be key that that law, willful retention of national defense information, it may not matter if the information was classified. we will dig into that more deeply. as the spotlight brightens on trump the doj continues its fight for some secrecy. the department expressed serious concerns that releasing the affidavit behind the search warrant could impede its investigation, also might endanger witnesses. still the judge appears to be
so first of all it shows you the danger of only looking at broad vaccine rates. we are doing a good job nationally, but if you look in at the state level, the county level and even the neighborhood level there are pockets of undervaccination that are places of danger for children who may come into contact with polio virus and we have to pay attention to that local epidemiology. i think it s not lost on pediatricians and public health officials that the places where we re seeing where we saw this case and where we re seeing polio in wastewater has a lot of overlap with where there was a measles outbreak in 2019. again, the fruits of undervaccination and of a very successful anti-vaccine movement. so this is a different disease but it has the same underlying cause. of course this sounds familiar, we ve been through the question of mandating vaccinations here. given the severity of paralytic
polio from a public health perspective, are mandates necessary, particularly targeting this low vaccination area? right. so we have mandates, there are school mandates for polio vaccines and there have been for decades. part of the problem was there were a lot of nonmedical exemptions, so exemptions for reasons other than being medically unable to take the vaccine. new york state did away with those recently, but we re still catching up and there are there are still pockets where there is severe undervaccination. so i think i think mandates are part of it and mandates demonstrably work, but there s also we have a messaging problem. like we knew this was a problem in 2019 with the measles outbreak, we ve seen this with covid-19 vaccination. we are not communicating as well as we should be in populations where i think directed messaging is needed. we need to be more john
in my mind, as you said, in this conversation with dr. murthy, two things that i hope that people see this parents see out of this is that this was not a this was a change in strategy, but i think based on the fact that it seemed like there was more data but maybe not as much data on two doses to justify getting those out there, but there was, for efficacy, but for safety, this was not a safety signal. those two doses are already shown to be safe from the data that pfizer shared. it was really that, could you start giving kids those two doses, not knowing what the efficacy data would be for that third dose, and that s why i think it makes it even more important that we re now waiting so parents have all the data in front of them as they go out and vaccinate others. but i will say this, though. we talk about this age group but you ve seen the horrendous numbers of undervaccination of kids between 5 and 11. we could do so much of a better job both in that population as well as older
we re talking between a thousand and 2,000 deaths every single day, a rise in hospitalizations. we are seeing surge after surge, and sometimes it s in the midwest, sometimes in the northeast, and, of course, we had lots of problems in the south just a couple of months ago. the other thing is we also have these weird political differentiations where the red states t red counties have had a lot more undervaccination and a lot more cases and a lot more hospitals being overwhelmed. i think it s a bit early to say we re in the endemic phase now because we re not. we re in a raging pandemic, and a lot remains to be seen where this is going to go over the next six, eight, 12 months now. i want to close with your expertise being a pediatrician and what you re seeing now, you know. early on the idea was, hey, young folks can handle it better. i m curious, what are some of
