Some countries across the globe are still experiencing a surge in COVID-19 cases.
Globally, there have been more COVID-19 cases reported in the last two weeks than during the first six months of the pandemic, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).
As a precautionary measure to minimise the risk of a surge in COVID-19 cases, Nigeria last Sunday announced a temporary ban on non-Nigerian passengers who have been in Brazil, India or Turkey within 14 days of intended arrival into Nigeria.
These countries are experiencing a surge in COVID-19 cases and health authorities said more than half of last week’s COVID-19 cases were reported in India and Brazil. ....

Asthma-related deaths mostly seen in low, mid-income countries

The number of people who have lost their lives due to asthma is the highest in primarily low and middle-income countries globally, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) statistics.
According to the data by WHO, it is estimated that there are at least 339 million asthma patients in the world, and this number is expected to reach 400 million in 2025.
Although the incidence of asthma is different for each country, the world average is around 15%.
Even though asthma is more intense in developed countries such as the United States and Australia, most asthma-related deaths are found in low-and middle-income countries where treatment and access to drugs are more difficult. ....

AstraZeneca donates nebulization stations to 4 African countries
Global Pharmaceutical Company, AstraZeneca, has officially opened and handed over the first
Pumua nebulization stations across 4 countries; Kenya, Ivory Coast, Ghana and Ethiopia. The nebulization stations are the first targeted 1,000 dispatch to be implemented this year. They are part of AstraZeneca’s Africa
Pumua (breathe in Swahili) Initiative.
The donation comes as the world marks this year’s World Asthma Day. This year’s theme is
Uncovering Asthma Misconceptions. In Africa, it is estimated that over 40 million people are living with asthma. The Initiative is a collaboration with Ministries of Health, local health providers, healthcare societies and respiratory health experts to redefine asthma care in Africa ....

World Asthma Day: 339 million people affected globally- Expert
World Asthma Day is one of the World’s Lung Days held internationally on the first Tuesday of May every year.

A professor of medicine, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Gregory Erhabor, on Wednesday said that asthma affects about 339 million people annually with over 500,000 hospitalisations and about 400,000 deaths across the globe.
Mr Erhabor, who is also President, Asthma and Chest Care Foundation, said this in a statement signed on Wednesday to commemorate the World Asthma Day, with the theme: ‘Uncovering Asthma Misconceptions’.
“This theme is apt because it is channeled towards uncovering various myths and misconceptions surrounding asthma with the aim of destigmatising the disease and empowering those with asthma to seek help,” he said. ....
