Ramadan travel poses challenge for Malaysia and Indonesia's COVID restrictions


Indonesia and Malaysia are tightening rules to prevent a surge in
COVID-19 cases around the Ramadan holidays.
Millions of people globally, including in Southeast
Asia, are observing the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. The ritual involves
Muslims refraining from eating and drinking all day and usually gathering for
communal prayers in the evenings.
While the governments in both countries are
working to enact COVID-19 protocols, a surge in cases is likely as millions
ready for the Eid holiday season.

Last
month, an Indonesian woman linked to the Islamic State (IS) militant
group was
killed when she allegedly tried to attack police officials in Jakarta.
The
incident has again raised fears that IS-linked extremist groups in Indonesia are increasingly recruiting women for operational roles.
This marks a major shift in the
strategy of Indonesia’s militant groups as they previously did not encourage women to engage in violence.
However, research shows that
female militants bring strategic benefits for militant groups and that to
counter this threat successfully, Indonesia needs to recruit more women for counterterrorism
positions.

On April 22 and 23, U.S. President Joe Biden will convene the biggest diplomatic event yet in his administration: the Leaders Summit on Climate, designed to reinvigorate U.S. leadership on the biggest crisis facing the planet. Biden has invited 40 heads of state and government from around the world to take part in the virtual two-day discussion.
Of the 40 leaders to attend, 12 are from Asia-Pacific countries: Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, the Marshall Islands, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, and Vietnam.
The Asia-Pacific region is particularly crucial in the fight against climate change. China is the world’s top emitter, accounting for over 26 percent of global emissions (number two, the United States, contributes less than half that, at 12.7 percent).
