Something’s different about this spring’s Boston Symphony Orchestra concerts, and it’s not the fact that they’re all online.
It’s been a long, lonely year without live music, and it’s probably safe to say most of us are tired of sitting in front of a screen to experience music, even now that the BSO and similar ensembles can safely gather musicians to rehearse and record together. What’s more, most of the repertoire is predictable, the same dignified warhorses that I’ve seen heard put through their paces many times at Symphony Hall and Tanglewood. ....

Spring Festival. For the first day of Tippet Rise’s Spring Festival, two films have been captured at the DiMenna Center. The first features violinist Katie Hyun founding member of the Amphion String Quartet performing Vytautas Barkauskas’s Partita for violin solo. For the second film, Tippet Rise’s Artistic Advisor Pedja Mužijevic performs in a program titled

Dallas Symphony announces full-orchestra 2021-22 season, innovative programs

Hoping for much better control of the coronavirus pandemic by fall, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra has announced a 2021-22 season of full-orchestra performances, even works with chorus.
Music director Fabio Luisi will conduct 11 programs, including a gala with violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter and concert performances of Tchaikovsky’s opera
Eugene Onegin. Principal guest conductor Gemma New will lead three programs. Former music director Andrew Litton will return to mark the 30th anniversary of his DSO debut. ....

The Classics a Day team has celebrated Black composers before. This time around, I tried to avoid duplication with previous posts. It was easy to do. There is a
lot of classical music by persons of color, both in the past as well as the present. A lot.

White was one of the best violinists at the turn of the 20th Century. His race limited his opportunities. His music blended African-American traditions with Western classical forms.
