Uganda : Computer Misuse Law will silence journalists

On 13 October Ugandan President, Yoweri Musenvini, signed into law the Computer Misuse (Amendment) act containing provisions that will seriously hamper press freedom. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) joins its affiliate, the Uganda Journalists Union (UJU), in condemning this repressive law and reminding Uganda of its obligations towards press freedom.

Somaliland: Journalists groups urge release of 2 journalists

Together with 6 other organisations defending media freedom and journalists’ rights, the IFJ has made an appeal to Somaliland President urging him to release journalists Mohamed Abdi Mohamed of MM Somali TV and Abdijabar Mohamed Hussein of HornCable TV.

Uganda: Nine Journalists arrested on trumped up charges

Eight journalists and the Executive Director of Alternative Digitalk, an online television network were arrested during the police’s raid at their premises in Makindye, Kampala, Uganda’s capital on 10 March as part of the investigation into alleged “offensive communication”. Seven were later released without charge.

[Reuters] The United Nations has condemned the attack meted on Ugandan journalists and civilians yesterday. Video clips from Ugandan media showed police officers beating up journalists who had gone to cover opposition leader Bobi Wine as he delivered a petition on alleged human right violations to the United Nations Office in Kampala. In a statement, the UN acknowledged that prior to the meeting, members of the Uganda Military Police used excessive force “to prevent a number of persons accompanying the NUP delegation from accessing the Human Rights offices.”
