763 new cases of coronavirus on Friday

(Latvian Public Broadcasting) On Friday, April 30, Latvia recorded 763 new cases of Covid-19, according to the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC).  The total number of cases detected since the start of the pandemic now stands at 118,558. Of 16,474 tests carried out in the past 24 hours, 4.6% were positive, up on the 3.9% rate the day before. 4% is regarded as the threshold at which the virus is spreading in an uncontrolled manner. The 14-day cumulative infection rate per 100,000 inhabitants rose from 422.7 Thursday to 430.6 Friday. Anything over 200 is classed as a very high risk pandemic situation under the government s four-stage traffic light system. Pēdējo 24h laikā:

Ugandan Covid-19 variant has mutations associated with higher transmissibility but there is no compelling evidence yet

Ugandan Covid-19 variant has mutations associated with higher transmissibility but there is no compelling evidence yet - Dumpis 2021-03-15 LETA/TBT Staff RIGA - The Ugandan Covid-19 variant has mutations associated with higher transmissibility, but unlike in the case of the UK Covid-19 strain, there is still no compelling evidence to prove it, the Health Ministry s chief infectious disease specialist Uga Dumpis told LETA.  This Covid-19 variant was first described in Uganda where it is the prevalent strain, Dumpis said, adding that most likely this coronavirus strain arrived in Latvia from the UK.  The virus has many different variants, the infectious disease specialist said, warning that the more variants are brought to Latvia the higher the likelihood that some of them will be more dangerous.

Third Covid-19 wave expected in two to four weeks - director of Emergency Medical Service

Third Covid-19 wave expected in two to four weeks - director of Emergency Medical Service 2021-02-24 LETA/TBT Staff RIGA - The third wave of the Covid-19 outbreak is expected in two to four weeks, which could result in twice as much hospital occupancy at Easter than at Christmas, Liene Cipule, director of the Emergency Medical Service (NMPD), posted on her Twitter account today. We are taking measures to prepare for such a scenario. It is clear that the third wave of the outbreak is expected in two to four weeks, Cipule said. According to her, the workload of hospitals at Easter could be twice as high when compared to Christmas, if as a result of the spread of the UK Covid-19 variant the same scenario will playout in Latvia as elsewhere in Europe.
