OPINION: Budget offers behind-the-scenes look at local government

Call me crazy, eccentric or a little strange, but I love this time of year when county and city governments begin the budget process for the coming year. That time is now, and I spent the past week at the Lamar County Courthouse as a stream of county officials and nonprofit agencies appeared before the commissioners. Soon the same process will take place before the Paris City Council. It’s a time when a reporter can sit inside where it’s cool and absorb all kinds of information about the who, what, when, where and why of local government, and about the many organizations that provide services for the community. Lamar County Sheriff s Office names 2020 award winners | News

The Lamar County Sheriff’s Office has honored three employees at its annual end-of-the-year awards. They are Tim LaVergne II, Tyler Bussell and Sgt. Brad Tafel. The Deputy of the Year award went to Bussell, while Detention Officer of the Year went to Tafel. Telecommunications Officer of the Year (dispatch) went to La Vergne. “Like I tell people, this is very humbling that I was selected,” La Vergne said. “On the other hand, I am just doing my job as a dispatcher. It isn’t something I would do unless I had a passion for it.” Sheriff Scott Cass in a letter said that La Vergne has served the office for almost six years and was nominated by his peers for the award.
