City councilor from Mexican border city arrested with cocaine in Texas

A city councilor from the Mexican border city of Reynosa has been arrested at a checkpoint in Texas, after U.S. border patrol agents found about 42 kilograms of cocaine in her car. On Wednesday, Denisse Ahumada was still listed as one of about 20 members of the Reynosa city council. Court records show she was arrested an inland security checkpoint in Falfurrias, Texas after an x-ray inspection of her SUV showed anomalies in the door panels and the seats. Border Patrol agents found 42 foil-wrapped packages. Ahumada told agents she was supposed to have delivered the drugs to San Antonio and had carried such shipments before. ....

US administration argues against trial in case of Trump-era family separations at border with Mexico

The government has argued in federal court in Phoenix that a lawsuit seeking money for five affected migrant mothers and their children should be dismissed despite President Joe Biden's loathing of his predecessor’s practice of separating families at the U.S.-Mexico border. A Justice Department attorney said Tuesday the case shouldn't go forward. An attorney for the plaintiffs said the case should be tried because the separations were part of a bigger policy. The judge will decide in the coming weeks. ....

Businessman linked to Texas AG Ken Paxton's impeachment charged with lying to get $172M in loans

A Texas businessman at the center of the scandal that led to the historic impeachment of state Attorney General Ken Paxton has been charged with eight counts of making false statements to mortgage lenders to obtain $172 million in loans. The indictment of real estate developer Nate Paul on Friday is the result of a yearslong FBI investigation that Paxton became entangled in three years ago. That move set off events that led to a separate federal probe of the Republican attorney general and to the GOP-led state House of Representatives’ overwhelming vote last month to impeach him. Paul and Paxton have denied wrongdoing. ....

New voting districts could change again in some states before the 2024 elections

More changes could be coming to voting districts in some states. The 2022 elections marked the first using new districts for Congress and state capitols that were drawn from updated census data. But they could be short-lived in some places. That's because court challenges could force some states to redraw districts again before the 2024 elections. The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday upheld a ruling that Alabama's congressional districts should be redrawn to enhance Black voting strength. That ruling also could lead to new House districts in Louisiana, and potentially Georgia. Some other places in line for new districts include New York, North Carolina and Ohio. ....
