A painting set to become the most expensive artwork ever sold in Poland was the subject of a legal stand off yesterday after armed police went to seize the masterpiece from a Warsaw auction house - but were forced to leave empty-handed.
Poland’s reputation as an art market hotspot has been given a further boost with news that Rubens’ 17th-century Portrait of a Lady is to go under the hammer in Warsaw.
A painting by prominent post-WWII artist Andrzej Wróblewski has been sold for an eye-watering PLN 13.44 million, making it both the most expensive painting ever sold in Poland and the most expensive overall artwork ever sold on the Polish market.
