Peatland loss: would compost ban help cut carbon emissions

Compost-based peat should be banned to help Scotland’s climate, campaigners have said.
Restoring peatlands, found locally in Perthshire, Angus and some parts of Fife, is an important step towards cutting carbon emissions and meeting climate change goals.
But peat is still used in many forms of commercial compost, leading to calls for local gardeners and retailers to find an alternative.
Demand for peat in compost growing
Andrew Llanwarne is a Friends of the Earth Tayside co-ordinator.
He said it was “disappointing” that big-chain garden centres still sell peat-based products.
“The loss of peatland is a major contributor to our carbon emissions.” ....

Green-fingered shoppers across Tayside and Fife welcomed the reopening of garden centres today.
Easter Monday saw some more easing of lockdown measures in Scotland, with a number of shops allowed to reopen.
With the day being a holiday for many, some centres had people queuing up eagerly at opening time.
The Bridgend Garden Centre in Ladybank Road in Freuchie, Fife, had people waiting to get in 10 minutes before opening. 
Customer assistant Finlay Methven said on Monday morning: “It’s been very busy. We opened at 9am – there were people queueing up at 8.50am waiting to get in. ....

'It will be great to see some smiling faces': Joy at reopening date for hairdressers and garden centres

Business owners in Tayside are looking forward to opening their doors once again.
Hairdressers, barbers and garden centres are expected to reopen on April 5, Nicola Sturgeon confirmed on Tuesday.
The news has been welcomed across Dundee and Angus.
Drew Montgomery, who runs Roe-Bucks in Dundee city centre, said: “To have an actual date is good.
“Just to get out of the full lockdown will be good in fact. I am looking forward to getting back in the shop.”
Mr Montgomery saw a flurry of new customers at Roe-Bucks, the city’s longest-running barbers, when first reopening after the first lockdown but noticed a downturn shortly thereafter. ....

Dundee businesses were hit by Covid closures in 2020 during a hard year

Local businesses have labelled 2020 their “hardest year, both mentally and financially” after a survey found that trading had plunged to depths not seen for two decades.
The new report, which comes from the Scottish Retail Consortium, claims that 2020 was the worst year for businesses in it’s 22 year record, with overall sales falling by a dramatic 16.6%.
