Performance among those voters by five points over those two elections. that might not sound like a lot. if you re talking about michigan, pennsylvania, wisconsin, states where donald trump won by combined 80,000 votes, if you re talking four or five votes of donald trump s voters shifting from 2016 to voting for him to voting for democrats in 2018, it kind of undermines the argument that all of us base is kind of locked in concrete and can t be moved. what s the bigger risk for democrats, then, moving too far to the left or staying too much in the middle? you know, look, i think the evidence of 2018 is you have to do a little bit of two things. you obviously have to motivate your base to come out. democrats are, as we talked about many times, increasingly reliant on young people and nonwhite voters. their turnout rates are lower than in particular for college educated white voters. they have to find a way to motivate their base. what this shows is it s kind of a mistake to assume ....

Korea, denmark and sweden have turnout rates above 80%. according to the international institute for democracy and electoral assistance, the u.s. barely beats out war-torn afghanistan. one reason why the u.s. lags behind in turnout might be that other countries make it a lot easier to vote. nations like france hold elections on weekends so voters don t have to worry about missing work. america still votes on a tuesday, thanks to a law from 1845 that catered to travelers on horseback. it might be time for an update. then there s voter registration. in the u.s., only 65% of the voting population is registered. much lower than other countries according to pew. other nations like israel and italy register voters automatically when they receive their i.d. cards from the government, for example, while in the u.s. citizens must register themselves. so how about how americans vote? is that antiquated, too? ....
