Oklahoma's child-welfare system continues to improve, according to expert report


Oklahoma seems to be making progress toward almost all of the goals listed in a settlement agreement that ended a federal class-action lawsuit nearly eight years ago, according to an annual update from experts who monitor efforts to improve the state’s child-welfare system.
To end federal court monitoring, the state needs to make “substantial and sustained progress” toward all the goals for a two-year period, according to the settlement agreement that was reached in January 2012. At least for now, the state appears to be making progress toward all the goals except one, according to the update.
The state still is not making “good-faith efforts” to improve “measuring timeliness to permanency,” which involves how long it takes to make long-term arrangements for children in the custody of the Department of Human Services, according to the update. ....

On Jan. 8, 2010, Arrow filed for bankruptcy hours after attorneys for a Utah bank sued Arrow s top executives for fraud that allegedly cost the bank more than $15.1 million.
Three weeks earlier, Arrow executives had shut down operations, stranding hundreds of drivers with their freight around the country without fuel credit cards or money to get home three days before Christmas.
Nine year ago on this day, Feb. 8, 2012, bankruptcy trustee Patrick J. Malloy III filed his final report in the case.

Swamped with inquiries about building on Capitol grounds monuments from groups ranging from PETA to Flying Spaghetti Monster advocates, the State Capitol Preservation Commission
The Commission said it had been swamped with requests from groups including Hindus, Satanists and Church of the Dude.
In October 2015, workers removed the Ten Commandments monument from state Capitol grounds after the Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled that the privately funded monument was religious in nature.
