Sunday shows preview: Lawmakers weigh in on Trump impeachment trial; Biden administration eyes timeline for mass vaccinations

House impeachment managers and Trump’s defense team gave closing arguments Saturday following days of evidence and arguments. The Senate ultimately voted 57-43 to acquit Trump, with seven Republicans crossing party lines.
Democrats had argued that the Senate should vote to convict Trump and then vote to prevent him from ever running for office again, while Trump s defense team claimed the former president’s remarks challenging the results of the 2020 election were covered by the First Amendment and that he did not incite the deadly mob that stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6.

Brown blasts 'spineless' GOP colleagues at trial

Brown criticized Republican colleagues who he characterized as having approached Trump’s impeachment trial with a closed mind despite the damage he s done to his country.

Speaking to reporters at the Capitol ahead of the Saturday impeachment proceedings, Brown said he was unsure if calling witnesses would change the minds of Republicans who have already decided to acquit Trump.
“They know he incited violence,” he said. “But their fear of this president campaigning against them I ve never seen fear do this. You can see it in their eyes. ....

LIVE COVERAGE: Senate trial takes turn with vote for witnesses

The announcement set off something of a scramble as the two sides mulled how to move forward. Trump s team threatened to call hundreds of witnesses, something they did not have the authority to do but reflected their willingness to drag out the trial for weeks if Democrats insisted on having additional testimony.
Instead, the Senate entered a statement Herrera Beutler released on Friday night into the trial record. The agreement allowed the trial to proceed to closing arguments and a final vote on Trump s guilt on Saturday.

Some Biden allies expressed relief that the Senate would not hear from witnesses, arguing an extended trial would hinder efforts to confirm the president s nominees and work on his legislative agenda. ....

Democrats are reviving a debate over whether to call witnesses for the impeachment trial against former President Trump
Neither House impeachment managers nor Trump s legal team had formally closed the door to calling witnesses, but senators on both sides of the aisle expected they wouldn t and that the trial would wrap up on Saturday.
But some Democrats are now endorsing the idea in the wake of new details about conversations then-President Trump had with Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy
