GOULDSBORO  Maine’s Downeast scallop fleet was out in force Monday with dozens of boats dragging across the state’s Fishery Management Zone 2 from Bass Harbor to Jonesport. The scallop fishermen included (above) Roy Whalen Jr. in the Hannah Marie (shown with deckhands Bob Smith and Chris Weaver) and Roy Whalen III (right) in the Slow Motion. Home-ported in South Gouldsboro, father and son went in opposite directions, but both did well, each landing the 15 gallons allowed daily per boat. Scallopers’ earnings also have shot up from $7 per pound at this time last year compared to $12-$13 per-pound this week. Still, so far this season, high winds have kept the Whalens and many others from venturing out on the four weekdays they’re permitted to fish under the Maine Department of Marine Resources’ 10-year rotational management plan.   ....
