Town Hall Sentiment: We need community investment, not more cops

TROY - Social justice activists are fighting back in the Collar City. Later this week, the Troy City Council is expected to vote to spend a quarter of a million dollars to increase the size of the city police department by six officers.
On Sunday night, activists held a Zoom town hall meeting at which they sent a message to city officials, their believe the money would be better spent some place else.
The city s plan to increase the size of the police force by six officers is part of the response to Governor Cuomo s Executive Order 23, issued last June, requiring municipalities to examine the policies and procedures of their police department and make recommendations for future changes to address police violence, biased policing, and systemic racism. ....

TROY Dissatisfied with the results of the city s Police Reform and Reinvention Collaborative, numerous community organizations are holding a town hall Sunday evening to discuss their own vision for Troy s policing.
The town hall, which will take place via Zoom from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., comes on the heels of the City Council Finance Committee s approval of hiring six new police officers to the Troy Police Department, which the City Council is slated to vote on Thursday. ....

Troy Police Reform & Reinvention Collaborative Begins Gathering Input

Troy has begun public meetings of its Police Reform and Reinvention Collaborative. Tonight, city residents will have the chance to share their thoughts in a public forum. As WAMC’s Southern Adirondack Bureau Chief Lucas Willard reports, a coalition of the city’s Black leaders offered recommendations this week.
Like other municipalities in New York, under Executive Order 203, Troy is due to submit a report to the state on April 1st on police reform at the risk of losing state funding.
Troy Mayor Patrick Madden, a Democrat, announced at the start of Monday’s meeting that he wants to continue the dialogue on police reform after April 1. ....
