I understand there are two different events happening. you ve got reverend sharpton s event and latasha brown, black voters matter r. these two going to converge at any point? reporter: that s right. let me ask you a question first. thank you for having me on this hot, balmy day me on this hot, balmy day. i m not sure if you can see over my shoulder that the crowd is marching our direction. we re expecting tens of thousands of people in dc converging. union workers, statehood activists, but as you mentioned, voting rights is the core theme of today. you have two different organizations, the march on for voting rights, the reverend al sharpton and martin luther king ii behind us, and you also have black voters matter, the make good trouble rally, that will be ending at the lincoln memorial. they re doing that today, tiffany. i think it makes the point that there s not one monolith of ....
William j. barber speaking today at the make good trouble rally at the lincoln memorial today. you ve been organizing rallies all summer. talk to me about the significance of today and what it is that you ll be fighting for. well, the great question before america today is what does it profit america if you hold onto a filibuster, and hold on to a partial infrastructure bill but you lose the soul and the infrastructure of the democracy, which is voting rights and the infrastructure of our daily lives, which is living wage and economic justice. this cannot be just about one day or one issue. it wasn t in 63. it s not today. we can t say this starts to push back. we ve been pushing back. this is a day we come together and if that s all you do as a day you haven t done enough. we have to continue to move and have a campaign. when i go on the stage i ll have a low wage worker from west virginia, who s white, one white, one black, standing together speaking saying look, this is not about ....
This is a good trouble rally. this is what john lewis stood for, what he, in fact, bled for on the edmond pettis bridge and i want to commend my colleagues and our chairwoman beaty, j.k. butterfield and so many others that have worked to bring forward the voting right act. i m proud to be a sponsor of that bill, along with the for the people act. but others have already said what this means and what it stands for. it is our most fundamental right, which is our right to vote. but it s not only about voting rights. it s also about labor rights, it s about civil rights, it s about women s rights, and we can t pass any of the important legislation unless we protect our right to vote. and that is why the senate needs to take up both the john lewis voting rights act, as well as the for the people act. they need to pass it so that ....
Vision of fighting for freedom, jobs, justice, and we will not drop the baton. let s talk about some of the goals of the make good trouble rally you helped to organize. at the top we have protecting and expanding access to the ballot. what do you hope to see come out of today s events? i mean we know a lot of this legislation, the for the people act, the john lewis voting rights act, are tied up in congress and without filibuster reform it doesn t appear that they will go anywhere. well, i think what is important today and the message that i particularly had at this rally is that, yes, we do call the republican party and we say you work for us, you work for the people, but we are specifically here to speak to the democrats that continue to come back to our communities and ask over 90% of black women to keep voting for them, to keep putting them in positions of power and then when it is time to do what is necessary for our communities we start talking about working across the aisle ....
Result of your participation and the participation of all of the thousands of people who are here today? everything we re fighting for, all the bills and rights in terms of our voting rights, in terms of george floyd s bill, in terms of dealing with the civil rights and issues, all of those are being passed, talking about students, whether we re talking about interaction with the people, all of those will be understood. we re talking about justice and the same, i m paraphrasing, it s a term that you make that the people who are most in need get the most constructive assistance. that s what we re looking for. thank you so much for joining us. this is just one of many events taking place here in washington today. on the other side of the national mall from where i m at right now at the lincoln memorial, there s another make good trouble rally and concert going on as the americans across the country and cities from coast to coast are out making their voices heard today on voting right ....
