all right, good evening from new york, i m chris hayes. we are watching right now debate wrap up at this hour, as the house gets ready to vote on the crucial debt ceiling deal. that s the speaker of the house speaking right there. earlier today, the republican proposal passed a key procedural vote, but it only passed with the help from democrats. it did not have the votes to pass it on their own, after 29 republicans defected. as of now, the bill is being discussed on the floor. it s expected to pass within the hour, despite that fairly significant republican opposition. this debt ceiling vote has been a crucial task for house republicans. for the moment, they took control in january, the big question was how the maga caucus, the majority of whom, let s remember, voted for trump s coup on january 6th, after the sacking of the capital, how are those folks going to actually govern? empowered with one of the two houses of congress. one half of one third of the federal governme
economy, luckily, as you pointed out, that is not something that democrats are going to let happen. that is why we are supporting this, but the fact that this is what mccarthy negotiated while holding our economy hostage and is having trouble passing, i think it shows you some of the dysfunction on the other side of the aisle. final question for you. you represent a swing district in new jersey. it s a competitive seat, you will probably face a competitive race in 2024. your district, districts like yours, even not the exact one, i think your constituents, the version of them in 2011, last time we went around this barrier, there was a lot of activation around this notion of, like, the debt and the deficit, the government spending too much. my general sense is that a dozen years later, people are much more focused on, like, the cost of living for themselves and things like that than the obstruction the debt or deficit, and i m wondering what you would hear from your constituents, give
yeah. so the what we are being told right now and it hasn t been formally scheduled yet but a number of people that are familiar with the planning of the house floor calendar have said that this will come to the floor as soon as thursday. there will be an opportunity for debate on the floor, as there always is with any resolution. and i think, anderson, the big question that we have here tonight is, you know, there won t be many surprises on the democratic side. this will pass and it shouldn t have any trouble passing. the question is how many republicans will vote in favor of this criminal-contempt charge? how many of them will stick by the former-president donald trump, as opposed to the authority and the rights of the congress as outlined in the constitution? this is something that the congress has the right to do. subpoena someone. and if they do not respond appropriately to that subpoena, find them in criminal contempt. so, you know, we are going to have to keep an eye on some
