Capacity Building for Resilient Development: Application of Safeguards and ‘Build Back Better’ approaches in construction

21st December, 2020 Local contractors in Tonga who were involved in the construction aspects of the Pacific Resilience Program (PREP) have been equipped with enhanced capacity on environmental, health and safety (EHS) safeguard policies and resilience standards through the application of the ‘Build Back Better’ principles.
Recognising the critical role that local contractors play in implementing the school reconstruction and rebuilding following Tropical Cyclone Gita, the Bank Executed Technical Assistance through the World Bank Safeguards Team provided capacity building to help them understand and apply the relevant EHS safeguards and help them to adhere to the requirements of the World Bank prior to the construction. A new research article identified more than 4500 landslides in a 196 square kilometre area of Tasman District after Gita.
A new research article on landslides that includes suggestions for forestry management on fragile soils in Tasman District is yet to be fully assessed, says Tasman District Council environment and planning manager Dennis Bush-King.
The authors of the article, published in the
New Zealand Journal of Forestry Science, used gridded rainfall, topography, lithology and land cover surfaces to develop a high-resolution model of more than 4500 landslides that occurred in a 196 square kilometre area of Tasman District in February 2018, during the time ex-Tropical Cyclone Gita brought heavy rain to the region. ....

Advancing gender inclusive water and sanitation in Tongan schools

One of the world’s most disaster-prone countries, Tonga, faced widespread devastation from Tropical Cyclone Gita in February 2018. The country’s education infrastructure was not spared: more than 100 schools were severely damaged or destroyed by the storm.
While Tonga has made impressive headway in its recovery and reconstruction in the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Gita, the national government recognizes that building the resilience of all its citizens, including women and girls, will be critical to the longer-term sustainability of that progress.
In partnership with the Australian government and the World Bank, GFDRR has supported an analytical study on gender inclusion of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) in Tongan schools with an eye for unpacking and assessing the gender gap in WASH facilities and informing a way forward for tackling the gap. ....
