THE ESSENTIALS WHAT #86 Michigan (7-13, 2-7 B10) vs #18 MSU (12-8, 4-5 B10) WHERE Breslin Center East Lansing, MI WHEN 9:00 PM THE LINE Kenpom: MSU-11 Torvik: MSU-10 TELEVISION Peacock (link) THE OVERVIEW Around the same time they were buckling my daughter into the Zamboni last Saturday, and on the opposite end of the lot, the Michigan men's basketball team was doing its own kind of buckling, welcoming new football coach Sherrone Moore with a double-digit promise not to be a distraction. The 10-point home loss to Iowa undid a 10-point win at Carver-Hawkeye, easily Michigan's best conference victory in the last two years. Michigan's now lost three in a row, and eight of their nine. At least the one win in there was a rival, but that's about all their next matchup has in common with uncanny shooting night at home versus Ohio State. In contrast to Michigan and most of the conference, MSU's defense has only been improving over the course of the season. Early losses ....
THE ESSENTIALS WHAT #44 Michigan (16-12) vs #64 Wisconsin (16-11) WHERE Crisler Center Ann Arbor, MI WHEN Sunday, 2PM THE LINE Kenpom: M-5 Torvik: M-5 TELEVISION CBS (Stream link) THE OVERVIEW Michigan's on another February tear. They are now 5-2, the #1 team in the conference, and #11 team in the country to Torvik since they checked on the groundhog. Michigan is also coming off their biggest win of the season, a 13-grit sandpaper affair at the RAC. As is often the case, freshman progression has been the difference. Dug McDaniel has become a defensive pest instead of a liability, has found his range on jumpers, and has reduced his turnover rate to ~1/game instead of ~3. Tarris Reed is turning into a switchable four; if we had any way to get a Hoop Lens account back I would show the two-bigs lineup has been Michigan's best look all year. Your eyes will have to suffice. As a result a team left for dead a month ago is now squarely on the bubble, needing two wins in their last th ....
THE ESSENTIALS WHAT #6 Michigan (21-2) vs #11 Wisconsin (17-6) WHERE Crisler Arena Ann Arbor, MI WHEN Noon Saturday LINE Michigan –5, 68% to win (Kenpom) Michigan –6.8, 79% to win (Torvik) TV FOX THE US Michigan was able to hold a Rutgers team that's officially "pesky" at arm's length in their last outing. At virtually the same time Michigan State provided a welcome batch of perspective by losing to Illinois. Also a welcome opening of the conference race, which Kenpom now projects as a three-way tie between the two Michigan schools and resurgent Purdue. The Boilers have cleared the brutal part of its schedule and now settle in for a home stretch with just one top-20 game, that at Maryland. Michigan, on the other hand, has five top-20 opponents in their final eight games. A return date against Wisconsin is first up, and probably mandatory if Michigan wants to keep pace. THE ESSENTIALS WHAT #53 Michigan (14-11) vs #71 Wisconsin (14-10) WHERE Trohl Center Madison, WI WHEN 9 PM THE LINE Kenpom: M -1 Torvik: M –1 TELEVISION ESPN THE OVERVIEW Well: at least Wisconsin is bad. The Badgers are coming off a loss to Nebraska that seriously dents their tourney hopes; those hopes are largely because of a bunch of extremely narrow wins. The Badgers slid by Dayton 43-42, ugh beat USC by five, pipped Marquette, Iowa, and Penn State in OT, and have three-to-five point wins over Minnesota, Penn State (again), and Ohio State. They've also lost two OT games and four other games by four or fewer points. What I'm trying to say here is that Wisconsin is playing an inordinate number of really close games and winning a bit more than their share. They're just inside the top 100 in Kenpom's luck stat. Let me just put my hairshirt on before I check Michigan's number… ah. Yes. A nice, round 300. Seppuku for everyone. Anyway: this version of the Badge ....
Wisconsin played terribly, missing every field goal for the last 10 minutes of the game to allow a 12-point lead to fall to two. To compensate, the officiating might have set a new Trohl Center record for lopsidedness. The difference then, was Michigan, or at least most of Michigan, once again failing to score, play defense, or rebound in another close resume loss. With Terrance Williams II out with a deep knee bruise, Will Tschetter started at the four. The energy boost he provided however wore off as Wisconsin took advantage of his lack of athleticism (and some Jett mistakes) to start on a 5-0 run of open baskets. Michigan responded with a 6-point run with Dickinson and Tschetter playing high-low, but it was quickly evident that Michigan was playing at best even athletically with the unathletic Badgers. Hunter Dickinson brought the full heel experience after comments on a podcast about Wisconsin's less-than-gentlemanly style of basketball. He also walked into the stadium wearing ....
