By early Sunday morning the voice mailbox on Justin Nixon s cell phone was full, and for good reason. Late the previous afternoon, the Laurel Park-based trainer registered the first graded-stakes victory of his career in dramatic fashion with Hibiscus Punch in the $250,000 Runhappy Barbara Fritchie (G3).
Hibiscus Punch rallied to upset Hello Beautiful and Dontletsweetfoolya, both multiple stakes winners coming in on lengthy win streaks, at odds of 41-1. It was also the first graded triumph for the 6-year-old mare, and second in two months for owner-breeders Edward Seltzer and Beverly Anderson following Eres Tu in the Dec. 26 Allaire du Pont (G3), also at Laurel. ....

'Causes alarm for families': Parents worry province is eyeing cuts in disability supports

Families of children with disabilities worry the province is considering program changes that could cut supports essential to the kids’ development.
The Ministry of Community and Social Services is reviewing the Family Support for Children with Disabilities (FSCD) program which helps fund services for about 15,000 kids with disabilities and is conducting an online survey open until February 1 which has raised concern among disability advocates.
“It certainly causes alarm for families,” said Trish Bowman, CEO of Inclusion Alberta.
She says the survey threatens the integrity of the FSCD program due to the choice and wording of some of the questions, so Inclusion Alberta provided a breakdown on its website. ....
