More-contagious variants of the novel coronavirus are driving the growth in active cases provincewide, as variants now represent 43.2 per cent of Alberta’s 11,464 active cases. Another 575 variant cases were detected Wednesday, raising the number of active variants to nearly 5,000.
About 47 per cent of the province’s total active cases are in the Calgary zone, including 2,220 active variant cases. The region has logged 3,326 total variant cases, the majority of which are the B.1.1.7 strain first identified in the United Kingdom. ....
