Letters to the Editor: April 10, 2021 Caring for our daughter’s medical care led to decreased Social Security Our daughter has been suffering from a serious illness for several years. At the end of 2019, it became so critical that we had to send her into care at a number of specialty hospitals and centers. Very little of the cost was supported by her insurance, and we therefore had hundreds of thousands of dollars of out-of-pocket expense for her care. We needed to cash in life insurance and retirement funds to pay for this.  This year, we found that Social Security has recorded this as additional income for us and has increased the cost of our own Medicare insurance, reducing our SS benefits by about 20 percent. We appealed this to SS, and they told us there were no allowances for medical expenses.
