Find it on a timely in a timely manner? well, first of all, aircraft are normally tracked through acars and other equipment, but if this equipment is tampered with, switched off or damaged or electrical power is lost to it, then, indeed, that tracking will fail. so you know, it s difficult to come up with something that is fail-proof, that allows aircraft to be tracked. right. but let me put this to you. there is an elt, the electronic locator transmitter, which sits in the roof of the aircraft, the 777, near the tail, and that s supposed to start transmitting signals to satellite when the aircraft is in water. however, it is not designed for high impact. so, if an aircraft was to hit water at very high speed, it could come off. so, that could be improved, and then the aircraft could be found. and those improvements are something that will be discussed in the days ahead. those black boxes are something they will be searching for in the days ahead, if this debris does turn out ....

But they believe now that they have some information at least that indicates this plane may have flown up to four or five hours out into the indian ocean and that may provide the final answer about what happened to this flight. wolf? if it flew four or five hours after the transponders stopped transmitting signals back to ground station, it could have gone a lot further than the indian ocean, right? they have calculated at this point the range of the aircraft, based on the fuel that they thought would have been left from the last time they had communication with it. that s part of why they are looking there. there are also indications, wolf, that the satellite that picked up the pings, they have been able to do some calculations about where all of this came from. so the clues are not adding up ....

Rio de janeiro back in 2009. black boxes weren t found in that disaster about two years later. is it possible that we ll have that kind of time go by or even longer? i think it s possible. the black boxes are going to be transmitting signals but they don t last forever. i think they last for about 30 days. it s mysterious to me i m not an aircraft engineer, but it s mysterious to me that all of the communication systems on the plane, which is relatively new and it s in the digital world with the plane talking to boeing and the airline company athe air traffic controllers, if there was some sort of a mayday that they couldn t take a second and push a button, you know, i don t know. i d hate to speculate but i guess if i had to speculate, it s some sort of a disaster in midair and in which case you should see a large, large debris ....
