Euro 2020 and Covid pile pressure on domestic abuse services

Domestic Abuse Advisor Jade Hibbert (left) and Community Team Leader Anita Pluckwell (right). A TRAFFORD domestic abuse charity is dealing with a sharp rise in the number of people referred to its services. Trafford Domestic Abuse Services (TDAS), based in Gorse Hill, offers support to individuals and families in Trafford who are suffering or have suffered domestic abuse. The charity received almost 750 referrals to its services between April and June this year - a rise of around 45 per cent compared to the same three-month period in 2020. It hired additional staff and opened a new refuge in 2020 to deal with demand, and it is still looking to grow now.

Victims 'trapped' at home by restrictions as domestic abuse incidents increase in Trafford in first lockdown

The number of domestic abuse incidents across Trafford increased during the first lockdown of 2020. Reports of domestic abuse were made across the borough throughout 2020 but numbers climbed after the first lockdown was announced in March, according to Greater Manchester Police’s data. A council health scrutiny meeting document reads: “Lockdown rules design to protect the spread of covid-19 and keep people safe were in fact trapping victims at home with their abusers and giving opportunities for further control and isolation from support mechanisms. “People of all races, cultures, socio-economic statuses, genders, sexual orientations and religions can be affected by domestic abuse, but we know that there can be a disproportionate impact where there is economic instability, inappropriate housing, lack of stable childcare and a lack of support.
