Millionaires plot New York exodus to avoid Covid tax hike

New York’s richest residents are preparing to flee the city after plans to make them pay the highest income tax rate in the US were signed off by officials.
Top earners will hand over 52% of their income to support federal, state and city budgets under the proposed hike, which is aimed at “boosting” New York’s “Covid-hit economy”, says The Telegraph.
But business leaders have warned that the move could “backfire by driving away the very people and companies the city relies on for its revenue”, the paper adds.
New York’s “wealthiest 5%” currently contribute 60% of the city’s revenue, and “fewer than 2,000 of the very richest account for more than a sixth of tax revenues”, The Times reports. ....

Wealthy business leaders who have historically resisted moving at least some of their resources to Florida or other less-taxed states explained to CNBC that they are now seriously reconsidering as working from home becomes the norm, allowing more flexibility.

Convertible bonds remain one of the hotter corners of the fixed income market. Investors can grab sector upside without totally diving in with the
PQDI, which debuted in June, offers exposure to multiple income assets, including convertibles. The Principal ETF “seeks to provide current income. Under normal circumstances, the fund invests at least 80% of its net assets, plus any borrowings for investment purposes, in dividend-paying securities at the time of purchase,” according to Principal. “Such securities include, without limitation, preferred securities and capital securities of U.S. and non-U.S. issuers. The fund invests significantly in securities that, at the time of issuance, are eligible to pay dividends that qualify for favorable U.S. federal income tax treatment.” ....
