Brampton School gets international attention over initiative


A BRAMPTON school got unforeseen international attention for their work on a Hero Wall initiative.
Last month the students at William Howard School, Longtown Road, appealed to other pupils and staff for video clips, photos, drawings and poems to go on the wall.
The project was led by the heads of school house Mpingo, Kayla Halliwell and Ellis Mayson - and co-ordinated by staff head of house Liz Brereton.
They aimed to raise money for their nominated charity, Eden Valley Hospice.
A number also made a video which was published on the school s website.
From there the initiative was eagerly picked up by a newshound in Ontario, Canada who asked associate headteacher Tracey Hill for an interview, who duly obliged. ....

Brighton looks set by-election after Labour resignation


THE city looks set for its first by-election in three years.
Residents in Hollingdean and Stanmer may soon go to the polls to choose another representative following a resignation.
Labour Brighton and Hove city councillor Tracey Hill has announced she will be stepping down due to “family circumstances”.
A political race to replace her would be the city’s first by-election since Nancy Platts was elected to the East Brighton ward in February, 2018.
Although the contest has not been confirmed, local elections in other parts of the country are expected to go ahead in May despite coronavirus.
Cllr Hill said: “I’m really sad to be stepping down early from my councillor role, but family circumstances have made it necessary. ....

IW Foundation announces grant award recipients and dates for applications

THE Isle of Wight Foundation has announced the latest recipients of its grant awards for 2020.
The Foundation, made up of the partners in Highways PFI company Island Roads, has announced Chillerton and Gatcombe Community Association, the Newport-based Way Forward Programme, and Whippingham Community Association will share over £12,600 between them.
The money will be used by each organisation to make their buildings more accessible.
Each year, the foundation comprising Ringway Island Roads, Meridiam, VINCI UK Foundation and VINCI Concessions supports projects working to tackle social exclusion on the Island. ....

Nigel Phillips, treasurer of Chillerton and Gatcombe Community Association, said: We are delighted.
The village hall is a very important part of the community but in order to keep it accessible for all we do need to keep it in a good condition.
This donation will help up to repoint the east and west walls of the hall and also install an outside tap that will help us maintain our grounds.
The Way Forward Programme, which provides a day centre, community support, training, and employment for Islanders with disabilities and autism, will spend £4,125 on a new accessible kitchen.
Tracey Hill, Programme Lead for The Way Forward Programme, said: We are absolutely thrilled that, once again, the Isle of Wight Foundation has provided us with much-needed funding. ....
