debates before the gubernatorial election. how high are the stakes, and what should we expect? what should we be extrapolating from what we re seeing in virginia? let s bring in susan page, the washington bureau chief for usa today. she moderated the previous debate between these two candidates. let s talk first about the state of the race here. this is going to be incredibly important, so let s tell folks where they are. according to a new monmouth university poll, mcauliffe has a five point lead with 48% of voters saying they ll be choosing the former governor, 43% saying they d vote for his opponent. that s still pretty close for comfort, especially in virginia. democrats didn t think it d be that hard. it is a margin of error race. it was moved to the toss-up category. this is a state that donald trump lost by ten percentage points. you d think it was a pretty blue state where president biden would be popular. but this is a context that you could not call at this moment. it is
north dakota, senator heidi heitcamp win less than 3,000. one democratic house seat as a toss-up. minnesota s 1st district held by tim waltz. 28 congressional districts that cook ranks in the toss up category. nationwide, ranking 50 races as a toss-up including 12 governor s mansions and 9 senate seats. the president is taking notice of this. he s making 11 stops in 8 different states between now and election day. holding rallies from montana to florida, stumping for republican candidates. in just a few hours, the president will be in the state of florida holding a rally in the city of estara on the gulf coast and people lining up since last night and he s working to get voters to the polls for his candidates there.
about the republicans. i thought in the last two weeks, republicans thought things were going so well. yeah. look. in some degree, they are. larry and his people are very part. i started out by saying that they moved 17 races towards the democrats including adding eight republicans into the toss-up category. they did it largely because of money. democrats have had a good fund-raising quarter. 7 of the 8 republicans that they moved to the toss-up category have more can on hand. but they re right on two things. one is that the generic ballot is going to wrong way. the end of may, it was 3.2 gap for the democrats. if that s what it is only election day, republicans will keep the house. today it s eight points. the second point that i thought that they were right on, the
