Torit boarding school closes due to insecurity, lack of food

The boarding section of a secondary school in Hiyalla Payam of Torit County in Eastern Equatoria State has been closed due to lack of a feeding program, an insufficient number of teachers, and insecurity in the area.
The school has now been forced to operate as a day school that does not favour learners from far-off areas.
It was established as boarding in 2011 to accommodate children from the neighbouring villages. Before the Covid-19 lockdown, parents discussed plans of resuming the boarding section and made some contributions but the plans did not take off.
Alfred Ajayo, the Headmaster, told Radio Tamazuj that the school cannot now manage students in the boarding section. ....

One killed, another injured as Hiyala-Haforiere clashes continue
At least one person was killed and another injured when two communities of Hiyalla and Haforiere in the defunct Torit East County in South Sudan’s Eastern Equatoria state clashed again.
The Hiyalla and Haforiere communities have been engaged in a series of attacks and counter-attacks that have led to the loss of lives despite efforts exerted by the Otuho Peace Taskforce and the Hujang Peace and Reconciliation Committee. This is the third time they have clashed this year.
On Monday this week, Eastern Equatoria state governor Louis Lobong Lojore instituted a committee of Otuho intellectuals headed by former governor Abdalla Albert Ofuher to resolve tensions in the defunct Torit East County. This follows an earlier ultimatum he issued to the communities to apprehend the criminals. ....
