The Topeka Fire Department responded shortly after 4 a.m. Tuesday to the scene of a house fire at 924 N.W. Jackson.
Topeka firefighters rescued multiple pets early Tuesday morning from a burning, two-story house at 924 N.W. Jackson.
Firefighters gave first aid to those pets but a few of them died, Topeka Fire Marshal Todd Harrison said in a news release. No people were hurt.
The cause of the blaze was undetermined and remained under investigation, Harrison said.
Damages were estimated at $22,000, including $17,000 to the structure and $5,000 to its contents, he said.  ....

Fire does estimated $30,000 damage to house near S.W. 6th and MacVicar
Fire did an estimated $30,000 damage late Tuesday to a house at 321 S.W. Orchard in west Topeka, authorities said. No one was hurt.
The Topeka Fire Department was called just before 8 p.m. to the burning two-story home, where Topeka Fire Marshal Todd Harrison said the blaze appeared to have ignited accidentally because of a malfunction in a wood-burning stove.
One person and one dog managed to self-evacuate before firefighters arrived, Harrison said.
Orchard runs north and south and is located is about one block east of S.W. MacVicar Avenue. ....

Cause remains undetermined for fire at former White Lakes Mall


Authorities said a tip they received led them to arrest three people Wednesday in connection with the intentionally set fire that did an estimated $100,000 damage Tuesday morning at the former White Lakes Mall, 3600 S.W. Topeka Blvd.
Topeka Fire Marshal Todd Harrison identified one of those taken into custody as Joel A. Sink, 18, of Topeka.
He wasn t releasing the names, ages or genders of the other two people arrested, whom he said were juveniles.
Each was taken into custody in connection with arson, criminal damage to property and criminal trespassing, Harrison said.
Sink was booked at 10:50 p.m. Wednesday into the Shawnee County Jail, where he was being held Thursday without bond, according to jail records. ....
