Subscriber only NEW Norths A-Grade coach Michael Williamson concedes his team will be rusty for their opening game of the Rugby League Ipswich season after a first round bye. However, Williamson was just as concerned about former Tigers mentor Gary Lawrence as his side prepares to tackle Fassifern at Harrisville on Saturday night. Former Toowoomba Clydesdales premiership-winning coach Lawrence was appointed in the pre-season to take over from Mick Newton for the 2021 season. However, Lawrence has stepped aside due to health issues. Having overseen major junior development and premiership successes at Norths in recent years, Williamson accepted the club s invitation to take on this year s A-Grade side.
Former Broncos captain Sam Thaiday says Anthony Milford’s relegation to Intrust Super Cup could reignite the playmaker’s career, similar to his own 2006 axing when Wayne Bennett dumped him from first grade after winning Origin for Queensland.
Thaiday recalled how Bennett’s tough love defined his own career after the second-rower returned from Origin overweight after a few too many buffet trips and with an attitude that didn’t sit well with the master coach.
Banished to the Toowoomba Clydesdales after playing for Queensland, Thaiday quickly adjusted his attitude and fought his way back into the NRL to help the Broncos win the 2006 premiership.
